Chaos Attraction

Love and Baseball

2022-10-09, 8:48 p.m.

Woke up too early again today, did the workshop. Kept my camera/mic off because I was too tired. I liked the lecture notes and tips he gave on one-person showing, but most of it was writing exercises and I was Not In The Mood plus brain dead, so I didn't do that. I crocheted instead.

I have been trying to get a $20 ticket deal (they offered me a discount since I went to the last show) at a theater for several days. They said specifically to email them about this (I also note the supposed coupon code didn't work) and I did, it didn't go well. I was all "fuck it, I'm just gonna buy a full price ticket" and then they stopped selling tickets for today? Da fuck? I finally gave up and called them--you know it's a lot for me to suck it up and call someone--and they said call us next time, we can't keep up with the emails. But I did get the ticket.

Anyway, I spent the day in Sac shopping and going to this show. I went to the Alta Arden Goodwill's great Halloween stash. Tried on a few formals but ended up buying LEATHER PANTS FOR $5. Seriously, that existed. I have tried on leather pants before in thrift stores and it was a horrible experience that made me feel sorry for all the famous people who have to wear them in sci-fi television (NOT comfortable, hard to get on, didn't look that great either), but these were actually comfy, GO FIGURE....okay, upon further review, the tag doesn't say quite what the fabric is, it may be pleather. I don't care, they were comfy. I also finally found a Mirabel-ish wig there so I can use that for the costume, and finally I found a Beauty and the Beast jacket, also for $5, SCORE FOR ME! Then I went to B&N and used a coupon to buy a book, then went to the theater.

The show was "Love and Baseball," which is about three encounters between a baseball fan/filmmaker and a philosophy teacher. First scene (1/2 hour per each scene, one act play) is that Michelle's friends with the guy's roommate and also used to live in the apartment, so she has a key and was just hanging out in the joint waiting for roommate to show up. They have a conversation, she has him tell her a baseball story, and then he decides they should go out, but he's going away to film a documentary about wolves for six months, and can she come visit? We see via phone calls that he totally flakes on this and stops calling her, she cancels the trip, and two years later she's engaged to roommate guy.

Will (baseball dude) shows up the day before the wedding to finally say why he flaked and bailed--he got into a sex-only affair with a coworker, knocked her up, and felt like he couldn't call and didn't know what to say. Showing up the night before the wedding isn't cool, dude. That said, they kind of have a moment of dancing, he tells her another baseball story of a guy whose name I can't remember (it's a one act show, I can't write it down mid-show, I think it was Fred Merkle) who was on second base, thought they won, ran off in joy and left the field, and totally fucked up, basically. She was all, "you're that guy," and certainly he was!

Two years later she's getting divorced, he shows up again, he brags about her to his daughter (I note this is kinda strange since it's spelled out they've ONLY MET THREE TIMES TOTAL, and yet by the second time she's acting like he's an ex), and he's signed up for her class, and they agree to get together. I about started crying when some "I will wait for you"-ish song (not the "I Will Wait") came on at the end. She even says he shows up in her life every few years.

It was interesting, but I can see why the playwright keeps rewriting it even though it's been performed before and even filmed? It doesn't quite transition well for me from "we're just having a random conversation" to "hey, we're having a moment," and then two years later she's acting like he's a full on ex-boyfriend instead of a guy she met ONCE and he flaked and bailed? The dynamics don't quite work with a "they meet only 3 times' setup and I'm not sure how you'd make it work without giving them more in the middle off-screen, as it were.

After that I did some more thrift store shopping at the L Street Goodwill, where I found a blue Belle dress for Ashley (who was all "I wanted the yellow one," never mind) and a tie-dyed Hamilton sweatshirt, which I was all excited about until I tried it on and it was too small. Wah. After that, I went to the grocery store and then home. But I'm really pleased about the thrift store choices I did make. Huzzah there.

Rehearsal Sunday night: didn't have to go until 8:30, huzzah, just did "Money Machine Montage," Morgan and I come on with Steve The Beadle (apparently that's what they called a cop then) to plead for money. Morgan is still trying to figure things out.

Danny had on a shirt about how nice it's going to be when a chicken can cross the road without having its motives questioned.

It's Morgan's 2-year-anniversary with Hugo. I hope it went well later.

Quotes: Scrooge Scott on his big head: "It's nature's frenzied attempt to compensate...I'll wear the Dickens out of that hat."

I keep rooting for threesomes and saying so during the scene, Morgan was amused.

Morgan and I kept comparing this one to Evita (constant busy) and Urinetown. Her: "It's like Urinetown all over again!" Me: "It's like Evita all over again!"

Morgan: "I hate being top soprano! It means I better not fuck up!"

I note that in this show, Fezziwig has blown all of his money later and goes to Scrooge and Marley for help, and they're jerks about it. Me: "I guess he blew it all on the big balls," followed by singing "Big Balls." Other Jennifer, explaining it to Maya later: "Spent too much on balls, Mrs. Fezziwig...."

Marley's onstage death is cut from the show. Omar: "There goes my dream of dying onstage." Morgan (referring to Little Shop): "Did I die as Audrey? Well, I die and then get eaten..." Me: "Do we all die in Urinetown?" Omar: "Urinetown? I have got to see that."

Omar on his quick change: "It's a good thing I wear a robe and nothing but a robe...Just kidding."
